Pressure- There are three common pressure ranges used by automatic pump systems. When the pressure drops to 30 lbs., the pump starts, it stops pumping when system pressure reaches 50 lbs., other ranges include on at 20 lbs, off at 40lbs, and on at 40 lbs and off at 60 lbs. Well size- A well must have an inside diameter of at least 4 inches to use a submersible pump. If the well diameter is larger than 8 inches, a flow inducer for motor cooling may be required. Static water level- The distance from the top of the well to the water level when the pump is not operating. Pumping water level-- When a pump runs, the water level in the well drops, or draws down. The difference between this level and the top of the well is the pumping water level. Tank elevation--The difference in elevation between the tank and the well is important when sizing the pump because some energy will be used to lift the water to the tank. Total dynamic head- The sum of the discharge pressure, the vertical distance the water must be lifted, and friction losses from the discharge piping.
